North Perry Airport (HWO) is operated by the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is responsible for the safety of civil aviation including issuing regulations and standards covering the manufacturing, operations and maintenance of aircraft. The FAA is also responsible for certification of airmen and airports that serve as air carriers. HWO is a designated general aviation reliever airport and it plays an important role in reducing congestion at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) and Miami International (MIA) airports.
North Perry Airport is a 511-acre public-use general aviation airport that serves aircraft and business owners that support light-plane activity. The airport has four fixed-base operators (FBOs), 154 T-Hangers, over 200 tie-down spaces, 11 flight schools and over 60 aviation related businesses. Aviation businesses at HWO includes aerial advertising operators, aircraft maintenance, aircraft engine maintenance, helicopter/airplane tours, and helicopter news operators. As of 2024, 417 aircraft were based at HWO.
According to the HWO fact sheet, over 317,000 aircraft operations were reported during the 2024 calendar year (CY) at North Perry. Take-offs and landings are considered an airport or aircraft operation. Historically, the number of aircraft operations were as follows: CY 2023 (316,446), CY 2022 (244,737), CY 2021 (195,192), and CY 2020 (230,189). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Control Tower at HWO is the busiest federal contract facility in the U.S. (Source: FAA Air Traffic Activity System Operations Data). The airfield has four runways for light general aviation planes weighing less than 12,500 lbs. The longest runway is 3,462 feet and the shortest is 3,000 feet.

North Perry Airport was constructed in 1943 by the United States Navy to serve as a satellite training facility in support of flight operations at the Miami Naval Air Station. Following the conclusion of World War II, the airport remained inactive until 1957, when ownership was transferred to Broward County.
