Hiring Process
Non-Certified Police Officer Applicants
All non-certified applicants MUST complete the following three (3) tests prior to submitting an application. All test results MUST be submitted with your online application. These tests include;
1. Basic Motor Skills Test (BMST) / Physical Agility Test - CLICK HERE
2. Swim Test - CLICK HERE
3. Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) - CLICK HERE
*** CJBAT EXEMPTION - Florida State Statute 943.17 authorizes any individual who is a veteran (as defined below), or holds an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university, is exempt from taking a basic skills examination and assessment instrument (CJBAT) as a prerequisite for entrance into a basic recruit training program for law enforcement officer.
The term “veteran” means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under honorable conditions only or who later received an upgraded discharge under honorable conditions, notwithstanding any action by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs on individuals discharged or released with other than honorable discharges. ***
For Non-Local or Out of State non-certified applicants - these tests MUST be completed prior to your Oral Board.
Certified Police Officer Applicants
All certified applicants MUST complete the following two (2) tests prior to submitting an application. All test results MUST be submitted with your online application. These tests include;

For Non-Local or Out of State certified applicants - these tests MUST be completed prior to your Oral Board.
Non-Local / Out of State Police Officer Applicants
Please follow the above listed steps (Non-Certified if you are a non-certified applicant, Certified if you are a certified applicant). All of the required test results MUST be completed and submitted prior to your Oral Board.
Completion of an Equivalency of Training (EOT) course is not required.

THERE ARE SEVEN STEPS IN OUR DEPARTMENT'S APPLICATION, SELECTION & HIRING PROCESS.
1. Online Application & Submission of all Required Documents
All applicants must complete an online application. You MUST ensure that you submit all of the required documents with your application, and ALL TEST SCORES MUST be included with your application unless you are a Non-Local or Out of State applicant.
- All required tests (Physical Agility / Swim / CJBAT) shall be taken at the Broward College Institute of Public Safety. Registration can be made via their website - CLICK HERE
Required Documents
1. Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization Papers
2. Birth Certificate (showing minimum age of 19)
3. Copy of FDLE Certification
4. Passing Physical Agility test from the Broward College Institute of Public Safety
5. Passing Swim test from the Broward College Institute of Public Safety
6. Passing CJBAT test from the Broward College Institute of Public Safety (unless CJBAT Exemption applicable)
7. Original Driver’s License
8. Copy of High School Diploma or G.E.D.
9. Associates Degree or equivalent (60 credit hours) from an accredited college/university OR an Honorably Discharged Veteran or current member of a Reserve component of the U.S. Military or Florida National Guard, OR two (2) years Certified Law Enforcement experience as a Police Officer.
10. Copy of CJSTC 58 Form (Background Investigation Waiver)
11. IF APPLICABLE -
- Police Officer Certification (Certified Applicants Only)
- DD214 Military Release Form - Member 4 Copy

Please Note - It could take up to 30 days after the submission of your application to be notified by our department. YOU WILL BE CONTACTED OVER THE PHONE DURING THIS PROCESS, so be sure to pick up for unknown or unrecognized phone numbers! If we are unable to contact you, your application will be removed from the process.
2. Oral Board
Once your application has been approved, you will be contacted by a member of our Background & Selections Unit to schedule your Oral Board Interview. YOU WILL BE CONTACTED OVER THE PHONE DURING THIS PROCESS, SO PLEASE PICK UP FOR UNKNOWN OR UNRECOGNIZED PHONE NUMBERS. If we are unable to contact you, your application will be withdrawn from the testing process.
Please be sure you can commit to your scheduled interview date and time. A no-show may result in an applicant being disqualified.
A three (3) member panel consisting of at least two (2) ranking officers from the Pembroke Pines Police Department will rate applicants in a formally structured interview. Appropriate business attire is required - dress for success!
3. Background Investigation
The focus of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification of education and training, previous employment and work history, driving history, credit history, arrest and conviction records, and past or present drug use.
4. Polygraph Examination
Polygraph exams are administered by a trained polygraph examiner. Test results are good for six (6) months upon the written recommendation of our department.
5. Psychological Examination
The time, date and location of the psychological exam will be provided to the applicant by a member of our Background & Selections Unit. The psychological exam cannot be repeated any sooner than one (1) year from the date of the removal from the eligible register (and then only upon recommendation of the psychologist).
6. Medical Examination
Prior to being hired, eligible candidates are required to successfully complete a medical examination by a licensed physician selected by the Pembroke Pines Police Department. Candidates will be required to meet the department’s physical standards as determined by the licensed physician. A drug screen test is included as part of the medical examination.
7. Command Review
All applicants who have completed the testing, investigation, and examination phases of our hiring process will have their applications presented to our department's Command Staff for approval and selection.
