[ARCHIVED] Remembering 9/11

PatriotDay_Web

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019 the City of Pembroke Pines, along with the rest of the country, will remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  This day, known as Patriot Day or Nine-Eleven Day, is recognized by U.S. law as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and has been observed every year since that tragic day in 2001. The City of Pembroke Pines invites everyone to attend a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony, September 11, 2019, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way.  The ceremony, which is free, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards.  It will also include guest speakers, community leaders and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians.

Each year on Patriot Day, flags are flown half-staff, and fellow Americans observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) which marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. This is not a federal holiday, so schools and businesses do not close and public transit systems run on their regular schedules. There will also be a Patriot Day Remembrance held at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., at 10:30 a.m. on this day in the Main Hall. Patriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day, also known as Patriots Day, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War.
