Over Two Hundred Attend The Third Annual
City of Pembroke Pines
United States Veterans Employment Expo

At The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus

Pembroke Pines, FL… October 5, 2017….Over 200 Military Veterans attended the Third Annual City of Pembroke Pines United States Military Veterans Employment Expo at The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. The Center named after Carl Shechter, a WWII Veteran and recently retired Pembroke Pines Commissioner and Vice Mayor welcomed the Veterans along with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and City Commissioners Ismael Monroig, Jr. Jay Schwartz and Iris Siple.

The four-hour Employment Expo provided Military men and women, retired and enlisted the opportunity to meet with representatives from 50 employer groups participating in the Military Veterans Employment Expo. “Potential employers appreciate the life experience, training, loyalty, and discipline members of our United States Military bring to a job," stated Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing. The Community Services Department is deeply committed to Veteran projects as is evident in the establishment and ongoing refurbishment of R & R (Re-Energize and Re-Connect) Village, a Veteran's housing community for honorably discharged veterans. “R & R Village provides a temporary affordable housing opportunity to help Veterans reestablish themselves as they reenter the workforce and get back on their feet.”

The City of Pembroke Pines is known for its long support of United States Veterans and their families. In 1972 following the death of Pembroke Pines resident Donnith H. Fletcher in Vietnam, City Officials named a park in his honor. Through the years Pembroke Pines has supported Veteran causes including establishing the R & R Village, the Military Employment Expo, park and street renaming, hosting recreational activities at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home and supporting the Honor Flight Program. The Center’s volunteer program welcomes people who are interested in volunteering for its Veterans programs.

During the weekday and evening The Center offers classes, workshops, activities and events for members 18 years and older and membership is free.  Many events at The Center are free and some require a reservation/fee.  On weekends, The Center hosts events for the community including Flea Markets, Arts and Crafts, Antique and Collectible Shows, and much more.
