Pembroke Pines, FL…. May 23, 2017… Please join the City of Pembroke Pines in honoring United States Veterans, living and deceased, during the Memorial Day Observance and Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Donnith H. Fletcher Park located at 7900 Johnson Street in Pembroke Pines.
The forty member 13th Army Band, Florida National Guard will open and play patriotic and military music throughout the Memorial Day program. The program includes the Presentation of Colors by the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard, guest speakers and concludes with a wreath placing ceremony.
On June 30, 1970, at the close of the Vietnam War, Donnith H. Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters that were shot down. Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart. In 1971, City officials dedicated Donnith H. Fletcher Memorial Park in memory of the first Pembroke Pines resident to die in the Vietnam War. Daily, people of all ages enjoy visiting and playing at Donnith H. Fletcher Memorial Park on Johnson Street, just East of University Drive.
