Pembroke Pines, FL… April 27, 2017… The Student Council from Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - East Campus, voted early in the school year to raise funds to fight cancer. The students held hat sales, bake sales, world cancer day and breast cancer awareness fundraisers and planned to participate in the Relay for Life, the overnight 13 hour walk, all in an effort to raise $2,000 for The American Cancer Society.
During Relay for Life held at Walter C. Young Middle School East Campus, students and staff set up a cookie booth and sold homemade cookies donated by Chartwells. “There was great comradery fostered by this fundraiser,” said Alina Perry-Smith, PPCES East Campus Student Council Facilitator and Curriculum Specialist. “Our students were especially proud to see their School Resource Officer William Bucknam participating by driving the famous Pembroke Pines Pink Police Car and leading the walkers around the track.”  In total, the East Campus students raised $2,442.00, greatly exceeding their goal. “Throughout the year our students, families and staff members have been supportive. Participating in the actual Relay for Life event was the highlight for
us all. We had great fun and enjoyed ourselves all the more knowing we were helping in the fight against cancer.”
Following the Relay event, East Campus students met and discussed the inspiring stories they had heard about people fighting cancer. “Our students not only had fun, but learned to be empathetic and extend themselves to help others. They also decided
to Relay next year and will encourage the student body to become more involved,” concluded Perry-Smith.
