AARP Florida and City of Pembroke Pines Partner to Recognize 90 Years of Social Security

Pembroke Pines, FL (July 24, 2025) – On Wednesday, August 6, the Pembroke Pines City Commission will formally present a proclamation honoring the 90th anniversary of Social Security, a vital initiative that provides economic security to more than 5 million Floridians. City Hall will be illuminated in red on August 14 to commemorate Social Security originally being signed into law in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since that time, several amendments have been added or changed by other presidents. The 90th anniversary celebration, held in partnership with AARP Florida, underscores the continued importance of protecting Social Security for current and future generations.

For nine decades, Social Security has served as a financial lifeline for retirees, workers with disabilities, and survivors of deceased workers. Nearly 46% of Florida’s older adults rely on Social Security for at least half of their income, making it one of the most critical initiatives for the state’s aging population.
