Adolescence and pre-adolescence are always an unsettling time, with the many physical, emotional, psychological and social changes that accompany these stages of life. Reports of school threats, bullying incidents and youth suicide add to the pressures of coping for both parents and children.

Knowing where to go is the first step to getting the help a parent or child may need, especially during those times when schools, which provide valuable resources on a variety of issues, may be closed for holiday or summer breaks. Navigating the maze of city, county, state and non-profit agencies can be overwhelming and confusing.

Since 1995, 2-1-1 Broward has been the community’s central point of entry into the health and human services system. Dialing 2-1-1 is an easy way for people who need help to get connected with the community service providers that can help them. The 2-1-1 Broward helpline is available to every individual and family in Broward County. To visit their online resource database, please visit https://www.resourcehouse.com/211-broward/ .

Services offered by 2-1-1, a live 24-hour helpline, include: empathetic listening; emotional support; crisis intervention; suicide hotline; needs assessment; information; getting information to health and human services; advocacy; online resources; and every call is answered by a trained, degreed helpline counselor.

The Broward County Family Resource Guide from Children’s Services Council (CSC) can be found at https://cscbroward.org/ -- this is filled with important information and resources to help families and parents.

There is no typical suicide victim. If you are or someone you know may be at risk of taking their own life, please call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.   Helping First Responders
