Major Jose Vargas


Major Jose Vargas has proudly served the City of Pembroke Pines since 2001.  

During his time with the Pembroke Pines Police Department, Major Jose Vargas held the following positions, including ranks & specialized units: road patrol officer, Special Operations Division Captain, SWAT Commander, Patrol Captain, Sergeant of the Vice, Intelligence, and Narcotics (VIN) Unit, member of the Anti-Terrorism & Intelligence Unit, Field Training Sergeant, Motor Officer, Traffic Homicide Investigator, Crisis Response Team member, and Field Force member. 

Major Jose Vargas currently oversees the Administration Bureau, which includes our Support Services and Administrative Services Divisions.  This role encompasses the following units: Backgrounds and Selections, Training, Finance, Payroll and Scheduling, Grants and Research, Emergency Management, Office of Communications, Alarms, Accreditation, Property and Evidence, Police Support Center, Red Light Cameras, Communications, Logistics, Records, Mobile Video Systems, Computer Services, Homeland Security, Community Affairs, Volunteer Program, Victim Advocates, Citizens Police Academy, Explorer Post, Community Emergency Response Team, and Code Compliance.


Major Vargas holds a Doctorate Degree in Leadership & Management from Saint Thomas University, a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Barry University, a Bachelors Degree of Psychology & Sociology from Florida Atlantic University, and an Associate's Degree from Broward College.  Major Vargas was named Officer of the Year in 2008, and is a recipient of the Chiefs Achievement Award, Administrative Excellence Award, Officer of the 4th Quarter (2007), Distinguished Service Award, and the Director's Award for Academic Excellence from the Southern Police Institute.

Major Vargas has completed the Command Officers Development course with the University of Louisville's Southern Police Academy, the Executive Leadership Program with Nova Southeastern University, the Florida Leadership Academy with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and Leadership in Police Organizations training with the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
